Your Health, Our Priority

Cardio Renal Syndrome (CRS)

Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) refers to a spectrum of disorders in which acute or chronic dysfunction of the heart or kidneys leads to acute or chronic dysfunction of the other organ. The condition is classified into five subtypes based on the primary organ dysfunction and whether the disease process is acute or chronic.

Type 1 (acute cardiorenal syndrome) is characterized by an abrupt worsening of heart function, such as acute cardiogenic shock or acute decompensated heart failure, leading to acute kidney injury or dysfunction.

Type 2 (chronic cardiorenal syndrome) involves chronic abnormalities in heart function, such as chronic heart failure with left ventricular remodeling and dysfunction, leading to progressive chronic kidney disease.

Type 3 (acute renocardiac syndrome) occurs when there is an abrupt worsening of kidney function, such as from acute kidney ischemia or glomerulonephritis, resulting in acute cardiac dysfunction, including heart failure, arrhythmias, or ischemia.

Type 4 (chronic renocardiac syndrome) describes a state where chronic kidney disease, such as chronic glomerular disease, contributes to decreased cardiac function, cardiac hypertrophy, and/or an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events.

Type 5 (secondary cardiorenal syndrome) is caused by systemic conditions, such as sepsis, diabetes mellitus, amyloidosis, or cirrhosis, which lead to simultaneous injury and/or dysfunction of both the heart and kidneys.
